From the West Yellowstone Star: Yellowstone Historic Center Updates
May 23, 2019
WEST YELLOWSTONE – Ellen Butler, Museum Supervisor of the Yellowstone Historic Center shared some updates:
Dining Hall windows
This past Wednesday and Thursday, May 15 and 16, the new windows were installed at the Dining Lodge.
The funds to replace the windows came from the Montana Department of Commerce's Tourism Grant ($30,000 awarded in January of 2019), the Union Pacific Foundation ($15,000 awarded in 2018), and the Historic Preservation Board of Gallatin County ($3,500 awarded in 2018).
The first event of the season at the Dining Lodge is scheduled for Friday, May 17, so the windows were replaced just in time.
"Earlier this month, we received notice that the Yellowstone Historic Center has been awarded a $2,000 grant from the Historic Preservation Board of Gallatin County to clean the two fireplaces in the Dining Lodge. I have an image that shows how the main fireplace has blackened over the years due to use," she said. "We will be arranging for this work to be done some time this summer. Kaitlin will also be presenting on this upcoming project at the Awards Ceremony on Tuesday."
Historic Center grant
Earlier this month, we received notice that the Yellowstone Historic Center (YHC) has been awarded a $425 grant from the West Yellowstone Foundation to help with the re-shelving/re-housing project for the YHC Collections.
The YHC is running out of storage space in the vault at the library and this grant will help the YHC with the cost of incorporating space-saving solutions using boxes that are safer for archival materials.
Recently, YHC Executive Director Kaitlin Johnson was asked to serve on the Museums Association of Montana's (MAM) Board of Directors and she will be attending her first meeting in June.
YHC is particularly excited about this news as having Johnson on the board will provide great, statewide representation for YHC as well as West Yellowstone and the surrounding community. To the best of YHC’s knowledge, Johnson is the first person from YHC/West Yellowstone to serve on the MAM board.
